NIKAWA refers to animal skin glue (animal collagen) in Japan. Add small amount of water into the glue pellets and apply the liquid generously to the edges of unglazed porcelain or white stoneware to prevent ki-urushi from bleeding into the clay-body and staining the kintsugi repair brown.
This high-quality dried glue grain is made from cow-hide in Japan.
Nikawa is a traditional material used for centuries to "size" Japanese paper and silk for nihonga paintings, and kneaded with pigment to make Japanese watercolor. High-quality animal skin glue are made from skins and sometimes bones of cows, pigs, rabbits, deer or fishes. They are all-natural and processed without preservatives.
Dry powder form makes it easy for storage. Just dilute small batches as needed, unused solution can be kept for a few days in the fridge.
