Magemono SHOKUPAN JAPANESE BREAD BOX?
Ms. Shibata is dedicated in sustaining bent-wood craft when his late father had gained Hakata Intangible Culture recognition for the craft. She understands the need to develop and trial new idea.
This year, Kyushu Sangyo University Product Design Dept. worked with ShibataToku to explore new product idea using bent-wood craft. It is also an opporunity for Japanese 3rd year design students to learn the value of this tradtional craft when it has been largely forgotten. One of the outcome from the project is this square Japanese milk bread (aka shokupan) box.
Since cedar magemono has great natural property being antimicrobial and in maintaining moisture, it makes the most sense to use it for bread storage. For centuries it has been used to hold rice. (See meshibitsu rice bucket. )
Fresh bread loaves in Japan are perfectly square, and are made with high-quality flour with no preservatives. Unless one keeps it in the fridge, usually by Day 3, mold would be visible. With the bread box, I have been enjoying bread for extended time without having to put fluffy fresh bread into the fridge!
The box also looks great on your breakfast or dinner table for danish or dinner rolls. And of course this is a container that could fulfill many other storage needs besides bread. Just be creative!
Be sure to check the size before ordering. Also try the round buckets for rice, pastry, and other storage needs.
Made with finely planed 4 mm thick cedar wood with the iconic sakura bark stitching. It has a very pleasant aroma of cedar wood.
